I also tend to carry flapjack or I have founf that 'Nakd' bars are very good, all natural ingredients!

As already said, flat coke is also a good boost

Real food all the way.

I used to carry gels etc but nothing works better than a bowl of porridge half hour or so before leaving for the ride, maybe a clif bar or two and some sugary sweets like jelly babies.

Drink wise, two bottles of regular orange lucozade sport!

I find gels, powdered energy drinks etc really clammy. Do nothing but sit on my stomach and make me feel uncomfortable.

On long rides I have banana on toast with brown sugar for breakfast then take gels, about 1 every half hour or so, but only if I can get them cheap! I'd prefer to go workout if I had to pay full price! http://www.discount-supplements.co.uk/ usually have some good deals, as for drink, I would take a 2 litre camelbak and 2 750 bottles to refill the camelbak, i do drink and sweat a lot! Also take a cereal bar or 2 just to have something to chew when I stop. This lot works for me, probably over doing it but experiment to find out what work s for you.

If you must go for gels, make sure you test and get used to them well before your ride. They don't agree with everyone and can go through your body surprisingly quickly on the first attempt, that is a disaster for a 100 mile ride.

The advice above is sound, real food is a winner.
