Need some advice on wheels. Currently running on Shimano R500 wheels but am thinking of upgrading to a set of Fulcrum racing 3's. Will this sort of upgrade be that noticeable - especially as they are £350.

I bought second had Kysirum Elites (I think they are similar in price new) and they were a slight improvement on the previous planet x model b's (£135 iirc) but that might just be psycological (the feel good factor). I guess if you've got the bling go for it, feel good but they won't dramatically change your ride ;)

i would go handbuilts for that many - can get a good set for that and be lighter and stronger than off the shelf fulcrums

Cycling Active has a wheel review this month. They gave the Fulcrums on test 10/10, just can't remember which ones - but they were sub £400

That what worries me. Am i just upgrading for the sake of it. Is it actually going to make a substantial difference to my riding pleasure?

If you buy the new wheels you should go faster as your wallet will be lighter...

PS.. I've been thinking about upgrading my wheels and asking myself the same questions, and to be honest its a 50/50 split - do I, dont I..

Its a difficult thing to quantify what exactly you get from better wheels.
I have R500s on my winter bike, good wheels for the money albeit heavy. I replaced my Ambrosios on my Bianchi for Fulcrum 5s. They are noticeably lighter, let alone how much lighter the 3s will be.
But, 'feeling' any great difference is difficult. I console myself (console myself is the wrong word, but you know what I mean) that despite my spending less time on the bike, my fitness is shot compared to two years ago...I can still maintain decent speed on the bike, just nowhere near as long as I used to be able to. Why is that ? Is it the better wheelset ?

Two things with Fulcrums, read the specs on their website, they do have recommended rider weights, ..and they are strong, certainly the 5s are. Used (and slighly abused) mine commuting, they held up admirably.

Pro-Lite Bracciano's are the lightest in that range (and double the price) !

If it's a commuting wheel, then go for handbuilts as you can replace the rims easily once they wear out

I'm thinking of selling my Tricross and using the proceeds to get myself a new set of wheels and mudguards for winter. Seems a little extravagant to have 3 bikes. I've got a feeling not everyone is going to agree with me on that one ^_^

I've only got two at the mo, but was up to four last year! Can you ever have too many?
