I am looking at upgrading the wheels on my Scott CR1. I currently have Mavic Aksiums and will have a budget of about £400-500.

The reason for the upgrade is I have alexrims 28s on my commuter (Kinesis) bike at the moment and want something a little lighter for that so thought about swapping them with the Mavcis and getting new for the Scott

First thing I want to know is would it be worth spending around 400-500 on the upgrade. Can I get a decent enough upgrade from this sort of money or do I need to spend more? I know as such the more I spend the better I'll get but cant see me spending much more than this.

Secondly I'm after a few recommendations of what to look at. Having searched online there seems to be an abundance of wheels in this price range, Ribble seem to have some good ones on discount but this just makes things worse. I want to try and narrow the search down a bit.

Any help will be very much appreciated

I have just put some mavic elites on mine, they do seem to get good reviews but I havent had chance to test them with the weather.

They do sem to be the wheel to go for if you are a bit hefty like me, if you are light then you might want to choose a lighter wheelset.

I got mine from CRC, they are £420 a set, but there is usually a £10 or £15 weekend voucher, and 3% cashback if you use quidco.

+1 for the Ksyriums, never had them but from what I've heard a good choice. Fulcrum Racing 3s under £330 at Ribble, similar spec to the Ksyrium Elites and excellent performance (my Campagnolo Zondas are identical apart from branding and spoke patterns).

If you're looking for lighter wheels on that sort of budget, (and I apologise for posting this again, as I have on another new wheels post) have a look at the Shimano RS80s on Planet X for £320 at the mo. They have a dura-ace carbon laminate rim and ultegra hubs.
If you want the full Dura-ace then you'll need to stretch the top end of your budget by about £80, but they're supposed to be the wotsits.

I will take a look at those as well thanks. I had RS30s on my old bike that the wife now has on hers and they were nice.

Just wondering as well if anyone has had any dealings with Rolf Prima Aspins? seen some for £355

Have you thought about hand builts? I've just had a set made to my spec. Should be able to get someting pretty good for that kind of money.

Just spoke to my LBS, as I'm looking to upgrade the wheels, currently running on Shimano r%00's, which I've had for 12 months, and have been bomb proof, never trued them, been a good solid wheel. I will probably get a pair of RS10's or RS20's for my winter bike this year, but want something better for the summer bike. So after having spoke to my LBS, he recommended some handbuilts, (I never knew he did them), he could do either 105 or Ultegra hubs, Sapim CX Ray spokes on Mavic Open Pro rims, for between £150-250 (dependant on hubs) or choose a deeper rim section (but would be slightly heavier) for more or less the same price......My mind is made up on handbuilts now
