Looking for a new set of wheels for my bike but I don't even know where to start.

Bike is a 2014 Defy 1.

The wheelset on it seems fine but having had some spare cash I would like to change it up.

This is my first road bike but I have been loving it but cant help think that some decent wheels will make me feel better.

It will also mean I don't mine sticking the bike on a turbo with the old wheels once the bad weather is here.

get some handbuilts made up by dcr wheels. will cost approx 250 notes and are well worth every penny

I've used handbuilts, Mavic OpenPro with HopePro3 hubs, but I wouldn't recommend the Hope hubs for a road bike, they sound like a tractor.

Just stick to a high spoke count, in other words a minimum of 32, or upto 36 if you really need to.

I'm now using Halo Aerorage wheels, off the shelf from Wiggle, they look good, ride well, the price is great and most importantly they're are bombproof, highly recommended.

I've had ridiculously expensive wheels on a bike in the past and ridiculously cheaply built wheels on my Brompton's. I can honestly say i can only tell the difference between cup and cone and sealed bearing-ed hubs. And only when the cup and cones haven't been maintained properly.

Unlike smokeysmoo I actually like the crisp sound of Hope Hoops and they are fantastic value for money and the aftermarket sales service is second to none.

If your under 100 kgs most wheels should be ok ,I am around 100kgs and low spoke count wheels with straight pull spokes are fine, in 14k I have never snapped a bladed straight pull spoke on 3 different wheel sets but I consistently snap spokes on j-bend spoked wheels with 32+ spokes.

If the present wheel set seems fine I would consider getting a good set of tires. It will make a noticeable difference.
Continental 4 Seasons, Continental 4000s, Schwalbe Durano and Schwalbe Ultremo are worth a look at.

Having a spare set of wheels is certainly useful - but you're going to have to explain what you mean by a 'decent' set of wheels making you 'feel better' ? Do your current wheels make you feel unwell?

Would also be useful to know how much you weigh, the type of riding you do and what kind of budget you have.

I'm still running the stock wheels on my 2012 Defy 1.
Just a suggestion - run them over the winter and buy some fulcrum racing 3's or Mavic elites in the spring once you have dropped some weight.
I have promised myself new wheels once I get to a certain target.

If you go for the tire upgrades. When its time to use the turbo get a cheepo rear wheel for it?

... and get them in 25c size for a little extra shock absorbancy. There's no great penalty.

Wheels are usually the achilles heel of all new bikes and apart from tyres should be the upgrade that makes the biggest difference.
I'd second a pair of handbuilts from Harry Rowland or dcr, lots of spokes on 105 hubs. Both builders will ask lots of questions and will build a great wheel according to your needs that'll ride well and last for donkeys.
FWIW I'm 85 kg and thinking of Archetype Rims on 105 or Ultegra Hubs from dcr.

The wheelset seems fine but you want to change it? I can't believe what you have said there.

How on Earth are new wheels going to make you feel better? Seriously?

You have a very nice bike there. The wheels are fine. New wheels are not going to make a right lot of difference to your bike.

If I had a pound for every time someone chugs along on here and says this wheel or that wheel will make a heap of difference to your ride and turn you from A N Other into Bradley W then I'd be a very rich man.

FWIW I had some RS30's temporarily replacing my Giant S-R2's and apart from a horrible whooshing noise caused by the chubby spokes I noticed not one jot of difference.

It's only an opinion but the wheels on my defy 3 are ace n I run them on upgraded tyres. Save you a fortune doing it that way.

The reviews on the standard wheel/tyres are pretty good in all honesty but I just figured I had £400 spare this month I could throw towards some wheels.

I weigh 105kg I seem to be stuck at this weight since stopping smoking so I can see me holding this weight a while so need wheels to be strong enough for me but also an improvement over what I have.
