Hello.

I intend to buy new (700 road bike) wheels.
My existing wheels have Novatech hubs but heavy and worn rims.
I am looking for good value wheels that will help increase my speed and help hill climbing ability.
I am have about £250 to spend,any reccomadations ?

Thank you

Doug.

Are you hoping the new wheels will be some kind of magic wand.

Fulcrum 5s paired with GP4000s tyres IME offer the best value for wheels and tyres at that price range .

Your the guy that posted on road.cc i saw the post on twitter. You can go one of two ways

1 off the shelf fulcrums or shimano ultegra

Or

2 a nice set of handbuilt wheels from DCR come in at about £265

Mavic Aksium come with Aksion tyres attached for around £200, probably a bit cheaper some places. I bought a pair 2 months ago and I love them.

I have a Defy 1 2014 and thinking of possibly upgrading wheels too. Would the above recommendations be worthwhile on relatively new bike or better to wait until they are worn out?

Basically wondering what minimum spend I would need to gain over stock?

Have a pair , tyres are durable , front wheel fell apart but still think they are Ok wheels , fulcrum 5s are far better though !!,Fulcrum 5s are far stiffer latterly than the Aksiums , Mavic bearings were better but the Mavic spokes twist non stop , have Aksiums and Mavic Cosmic Elites and the spokes twist and wheels need truing nearly every ride , Fulcrum 5s I had needed one broken spoke fixed at 5000 miles , my Aksiums are down to a rear wheel at 3000 miles as the the front spokes siezed to the front nipples. no contest , the fulcrums are more user friendly:smile:

I agree, Fulcrums are a better wheelset. But fingers tightly crossed, mine have been ok so far. Haven't had them that long I know.

To be honest I would stick with what came with the Defy. I changed my because the stock ones buckled a couple of times for no real apparent reason and I was having to true them quite often. I was out one day and ended up in Evans, saw the Mavics hanging up and took a chance. So far so good.
But there are many people on here that are far better qualified than me to,give you advice on new wheelsets.
Good luck.

Cheers for the reply. Got some cash from Christmas and unsure what to spend on yet. Wheels seem too expensive in order to gain over my stock set it seems.

I prefer my Planet X Al30's to my Aksiums. They are lighter, stiffer and more aero and they can be had for about £150 Stick a set of Michelin Pro4 Race tyres with latex inners and you have a damn good training wheelset for around £200.
