Was the self adhesive disc you used sticky on both sides, or used more to prevent rubbing? I don't think mine will hold under tension from the stays alone.

It was one of the felt discs that you might use on the bottom of a chair leg to protect the floor, available
from Wilko, Poundland etc, sometimes Lidl and Aldi. Sticky one side only.
