I have been trying to get a project road bike for months but they are always either too far away or I get outbid. Patience however pays off and I have just got this bike New project off Ebay. I anticipate having to spend a few pounds on it but can do it over a period of several weeks, there is no hurry as long as is done for the summer. I will have a drive over tomorrow and collect it.

Yup, looks ok for a plaything  Nice price...there's no logic in old Raleighs, some get a good price, some go cheap, i think you did ok.
Any idea what model it is ?

I don't know what model it is. It's a cheapie Raleigh, so at that level there isn't a great deal between them apart from fancy paint jobs!
I will have a good look at it tomorrow when I get it home and start to decide what I have to do with it.

Looks a nice bike - what's the tubing?

BTW - i'm sure you wont but just in case - don't ride those tyres. Apart from deafening you for a couple of days when they go pop the sudden deflation is pretty scary - and I speak from experience.

Right. the bike is a Raleigh Aquilus, so nothing special but should make a reliable pleasure bike. The frame is made from Chromoly, and the bike is surprisingly light. The paintwork is in pretty good condition so a good wash and wax should bring it up nice. The rear wheel could do with truing. It isn't too bad so I will take it into my LBS and let them play. It needs new tyres and tubes. The brake levers would benefit from a blow over with some new paint, and the chrome work is nothing that some Auto Solvol wont sort out. All in all, for £31 I am not disappointed.

Update on the bike. It has had a good clean, and amazingly the paint on the frame is perfect with no scratches, chips or dents. It is as good as the day it came out of the factory so I can leave the spray gun in the shed. It has new tyres and tubes fore and aft which also improve the looks. I have a new 7 speed freewheel on order and a new chain here ready so will do a changeover when it arrives, oh, and I have ordered a frame pump as I can't be doing with those piddly little mini things. Costs have been £31.51 for the bike, £17 for the tyres and tubes from Woolly Hat Shop, £6 for the freewheel from Ebay, and a fiver for the pump. So far under £60, not counting the chain which I already have in my spares box, and a new pair of pedals and toe clips (the old ones still on bike in frame picture) purchased off a seller on Cycle Chat a few months ago but never used. This is the frame after the clean. I hadn't done the tyres at that time, but wheels are wheels are wheels LOL

That's in great condition considering the price you paid, a real bargain.

But that saddle...

Size of my bum, you can't see the saddle

I do agree with you though, and it is on the schedule to change when I can save a few pennies.
