hi all, as the title of this post says im new here. After a long time with out a bike i decided it was high time i got back in the saddle so a couple of years ago(2007) i invested in a new carrera vulcan disc spec.Since then i have been riding to and from work daily and along the thames tow path, along the way ive lost about 2 stone and am now wanting to attack some proper trails. I'm wondering wether i should change my bike or would it be worth up grading what i have as the frame its self is ok. whats bolted to the frame is (as my mate pointed out)a bit budget.Just after a bit of advice on this as i dont want to end up wasting money .
thanks
Si

Hi Si, Just wanted to pop in and say hello.. I am similar to you in that I have recently taken up riding again - mainly for the work commute but enjoying myself and thinking about buying a better bike in time. Will be interested to see the answers you get.

hi and welcome.

foo, is it a mountain type bike your after? if so try a post on the MTB section. If you're unsure tell us what you want the bike to do and we'll try and point you in the right direction.

Whilst i would never put anyone of buying a new bike (hence why i have 5 in the garage!) i wouldn't worry too much about things being budget. As long as they work so what?

Welcome on the forum .Its handy to have an older less desirable bike to use as a hack for when you need to leave it locked to a lampost outside the pub railwaystation shops etc.If you use it for work maybe a new bike on the cycle to work scheme may be a good route forward for you.

I should think that after a couple of years riding you have a good idea what you really want.

Keep the old bike for commuting and get yourself a new one for proper mountain biking would be my suggestion - upgrading can work out quite expensive anyway, plus there is always n+1 to consider ;)
