Deffo overshoe covers they don't have to be expensive.....keeps your toes warm & dry :music:
when your toes/feet get cold you can't warm them up
Decathlon are a good starting point. They have good value, good quality kit in store where you can try it on without the vagaries of mail order. One specific bit of kit for winter riding I would push is a longsleave 100% merino wool base layer.

Thanks for your help,

I have received my mountain bike mag this month which has a wide range of base layers on an article. defo a must for me...

So far I have some padded inner short liners from my mountain bike, a pair of winter cycle gloves and a helmet.

I am looking for,

1) A pair of Altura winter cruisers as I believe ill feel more confident using them due to my weight and fitness levels, trying to avoid "all the gear and No idea principle"

2) Pair of oversocks for my shoes (picked my bike up today and was told I have the wrong shoes and cleats as there are for mountain bikes will that matter to begin with)

3) wind proof jacket

4) a Base layer

Thanks for all your help.

You'll want fairly snug fitting clothes on a roadbike, especially if it's cold and windy, warmer and less drag

I see where your coming from I just wanted to get some basic clothing so I could get out and ride and not get to cold within a few miles. Plus I am not certain on roadies terminology yet. thanks for all your advice much appreciated.

Padded shorts, something over the top like the alturas, a baselayer (merino best as doesn't get stinky but can be itchy) and a jacket / winter jersey. Tow pairs of decent socks and maybe some overshoes, decent gloves, skullcap (under or instead of helmet depending on your views), buff round you neck

Wiggle DHB kit not a bad place to start (their women's clothing is stingily sized, I think the men's better), or Altura

You will be cold to start and then you should warm up

How much are you wanting to spend on the kit? I reckon £125-200 should do it if you shop cannily (and avoid Rapha, Castelli and Assos)

Thanks for your help that list sounds great TBH, I would spend around 200-300. Would you recommend any good online retailers.

I like Evans as you can return stuff in store assuming there is one close

Otherwise, Wiggle and Chain Reaction do free Collect+ returns, as do Sigma (if you want to go higher end, although they have good clearances)

To be honest, also try your local shop, good to try stuff on

re: shoes and pedals, did you buy new?

Shorts: DHB (wiggle) Aeron Shorts are good, have worn them on a 60 mile ride and felt good, you can put a pair of running tights on over the top if you want (I would right now, it's cold)

Not too sure what to say about anything else for you, check out your local Evans as they have loads of stuff on sale atm.

also available in orange
FWIW, if you have a budget I'd put most of your money into bibshorts/tights/knickers, shoes & gloves. These are the parts that come into contact with your bike and they take the most punishment. The last thing you want to is to feel uncomfortable out on a ride.

I think the very worst look is black tights under baggy shorts, want to be a sporting cyclist then dress like one.Tight fitting lycra is what cycling was designed for.

Yes I did mean to write that last line like that.^_^
