I like steel bikes and I cannot lie..

OK, back from the lifeboats, and Marin stripped to bare frame and forks.
Good bits: headset has obviously been serviced in the not too distant past, and adjusts well. Pretty much everything came off easily, although removing the chainrings got me some new scars, despite the correct tools. Derailleurs are both in good nick, once the crud had been removed. Alivio cantis are not too bad, but undecided as to whether I'll use them, replace them, or switch completely to V-brakes.
Bad bits: BB (a cartridge) is toast, as are all the chainrings and shifters. Will try to get some replacement alloy ones; these are all steel (22-32-42). And of course, the seat post. Now that the frame is stripped, it's been dosed up with another load of Plusgas, through the cage mounts, and left upside down to fester for a few days.
Looking at the wheels: they are past redemption, but the rear is the first time I have seen a proper 7-speed cassette.

If you need 7 speed cassettes talk to David Hinde Bikes as I purchased a couple last week.

What crank are you thinking about or are you going for rings ?
As I'm not getting on with the Scott, I'll transplant as much as I can from that. The STX crank is 175mm. I'd ideally prefer a 170 or 165 but doubt I'd get one with the correct BCD. Will look, however, along with some new chainrings.
