I noticed a few of the teeth are worn on the 23t-13 7 speed rear cassette and would like to replace it. The bike has rx100 throughout and am hoping the cassette is a shim standard fit so that I can put a broader range cassette on, possibly a 28t-13.

Can anyone help with a new purchase. Kev

Unless you are absolutely sure you might want to check whether you have a freewheel or cassette, since 7 speed can be either. See this if unsure how they differ.

For these things sjs is as good as any for selection, as in this and this.

I too have an Optimum of the same vintage. Rear hub takes a cassette as you say..

7 speed ones are still commonly available new in 11-28 and 12-28 versions.

FWIW I fitted a Shimano 8/9/10 speed freehub and longer axle to the original back wheel on mine and it fits inside the dropouts without much persuasion. I am currently running it as a 9 speed.

Sorry to dig this one up again, but I'm half considering a set of Brifters on Le Pug but got condition 7 speeders are like hens teeth.

Will the rx100 hub take an 8 speed cassette?

If it's a seven speed hub then no, it won't take an 8 speed.
All is not lost, though. You can split a 9 speed cassette and fit 8 of the cogs on, and use a 9 speed STI. I'm willing to bet that exactly the same trick would work using 9 cogs from a 10 speed cassette.
Sheldon has the full guide to this.
