Finally got my new (and first ) road bike and after going a little further than intended this weekend I have to say that the saddle inflicted some serious GBH on me.

Any tips on how to make it more comfortable or any idea how long a saddle can take to mould itself gently around the human "form"

Unless its leather, then i very much doubt it will do.
Only thing you can really do is either get a Brooks(i have just got one, sort of comfy, hopefully when it breaks in it will be even better) or get a Specialized something or other, Avator or Toupe, get your bum measured up though.

My mate was having problems and got his ass measured, bought a new saddle to fit. Problem solved

Well, it may be due to bike fit more than the saddle itself.

However, if you are new to riding, you can't expect to jump on a bike and ride any kind of distance without discomfort. You need to break yourself in to a certain extent.

Sudocrem before and after helps a tad - but as the others say, do invest in a good saddle. My saddle has a cloth central strip which stops my arse sliding around too much and is a great help.

Mik, I see you're not far from me, I'm in Blackburn.

How much do you know about bike fit and correct saddle posture and position? Are you wearing padded shorts? I've got a spare saddle you could try, which is very comfortable for me. It would be a useful comparison with your own.

Mik, it could be that you need to adjust to using the road bike. Take some time online looking at the advice about how to set up your bike and go out for a couple more (possibly shorter) rides. You may find that the saddle becomes more comfortable the more you use it. If not, then you can look at getting a new one and you're no worse off.

First thanks to all your suggestions, links and especially for the offer of trying an alternative saddle.

I do wear padded shorts and having had a look at some of the sites and reading your replies have come to the conclusion that I probably did a little too long in the saddle of an unfamiliar bike without taking some time to get to know it.

I've been using a steel framed Nigel Dean Tourace for years and its like settling into an old armchair by now. I think its been some what of a culture shock turning to a road bike at my advanced age.

The sadle on the road bike is a Selle which appear to have a fairly stable reputation and I was measured for fit (not my backside though) for the bike itself so I am a little loath to mess with the set up until I am convinced that the problem lies there and not in my impatience to have it "right".

Anyhow have been doing small local runs of between 10-15 miles of a morning without too many problems ( although still feels like I am going to end up with with 3 adams apples at times) and hopefully this will ease the way towards more comfortable riding.

If it doesnt then I will certaintly start to tinker with the saddle position or consider either exchanging it for my touring saddle or investing in something like a Brooks.

Thanks again

A combination of a saddle that is designed to be comfortable over long distances and making sure you are fitted properly to your bike is what's needed here

Read all about such matters, watch a video and get a free download over at SMP4Bike

Pay particular attention to getting a decent pair of shorts too.

All that said, it will never be as comfy as sitting in an armchair!
