Hi all good folks

Wanted some advice from all you road racers out there if replacing my tyres with quality top end racing tyres Pro3,Conti GP, Schwalbe and the like would make a difference to the riding and feel of my bike? NOT wanting to upgrade my wheels just yet monies a bit tight and thought this would be the next best thing to do also should i replace the inner tube too and what kind of inner tube should i be looking for?.

Thanks guys.

Rather depends what your existing tyres are like? And whether your wheels are suitable for 23 mm tyres? And what your existing inner tubes are like?

I'm not a road racer but generally the more you pay the lighter and better rolling a tyre will be - although some of the top-end tyres tend to be so light that they are not as hard wearing.

Personally I use the Pro 3's as a good all round tyre (reasonably punture proof and hard wearing with plenty of grip).

I'd also recommend getting some good quality lightweight inner tubes (saving weight at the rim is most helpful both in case of tyres and tubes) - I use Michelin Aircomp Ultra Lights.

Tyres make a big difference to the ride .Michelin Krylion carbon got a good write up in Cycling Plus coming top out of about 10 tyres suitable for road bike commuting. The criteria was for a fast easy rolling tyre but with puncture resistance.

They are on chain reraction for £21 each at the moment.

Yes i saw that and i would consider them as a next purchase or the durano +`s as i run gator skins atm and i find that they are not as good as the hype ...........

For me i like a good running tyre but protection is also important, i know there is marathon+ but i cant fit more than a 25 mm on my clearances.

I would highly recommend the Durano+'s too, but the OP wants top end racing tyres, and as good as they are they are definitely not that. I could feel the difference when I changed from the Conti 4 seasons, not much but slightly slower. in return you get better protection though.

I think top-end tyres are fabulous and make quite a difference to the ride and feel of a bike (assuming say it's a reasonable quality road-bike, not a heavyweight clunker!).

I went for Pro-Race 3's (after riding PR2s)and absolutely love the ride handling and grip (particularly in the wet). P* protection has been generally good for such a light and low rolling resistance tyre. You don't get something for nothing though; the soft grippy compound wears a bit quicket than many other tyres and they can cut-up fairly easily too.
On balanve for my money, the joy of riding them quickly overcomes the faster wear.

Michelin PR3s, love 'em.

I don't know how much of it is psychological but they make a good bike feel better IMO. My Bianchi came with wired basic GP tyres (good enough tyres and I cant really fault them) but when the rear wore out I replaced them with conti GP4000's it certainly felt/ handled better and my times improved but how much of that which due to my improvement is anybodies guess.
Conversely my Kinesis had 4seasons on them and when they've worn out on the rear, I transferred the front to the rear and put a cheaper wired conti GP on the front and again it feels slightly worse but nothing you could really measure IMO and nothing that would make me instantly change back.
