Good tip - I'm downloading it now.

I'll check out the suggestions on the bikes too.
Although I thoroughly enjoy my Felt F95, and recommended it earlier in this thread, you certainly wouldn't be disappointed with a Cube. A friend of mine owns one and loves it. I've ridden it a bit (although it is a bit on the small side for me) and the ride quality is right up there! I think you're probably going to end up being spoilt for choice, as there are so many deals about. Spec's will be fairly similar, apart from the odd stand-out bit of kit designed to catch your eye, so I guess a shortlist of three or four contenders and then trying to get a test ride on them might be the best way forward. Whatever you end up with, I hope you thoroughly enjoy riding it.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
There's a £500 bike group test in the June issue of Bikes etc.

You could probably view it online for free as the July issue is out now.

I reckon a 2014 Cube Peloton, Giant Defy or Cannondale summatoruva from Pauls Cycles is best bet for your $$$ or £££.
Yes it a good review, pity they did not have the btwin or merlin bikes but i guess they can only review what they are given at the time ,
@PhilDawson8270 , sorry if i we have a misunderstanding i was merely trying to say your response with regards cheap forks was a bit of a genralization , i have had a alloy fork and a carbon fork on the same branded bikes , virtuoso and vanquish and i do find in this case the carbon does help a bit . Could be the 11 hour night shifts atm = grumpy bunny  .

Very nice they are too, I saw a couple of them from that range in store last week.

Mind you the Malt CR, CR-SL and Carbon Evolution models are all worth a look and still available.

People! Are you completely trying to info overload a complete n00b? If you are; it's working!

Now, in between looking at other recommendations in this thread, I'd been looking at the PlanetX website, because I can remember considering the On One Pompino when I thought I wanted a single speed bike - I didn't and bought the Plug 3. However, I did like the cut of their jib. However, whilst I can broadly get a handle on Shimano's hierarchy of components, I seem to be failing to do so with SRAM. I'd seen the RT-58, it's triple butted frame and full carbon fork, but with some of the disagreement on the relative merits of carbon v aluminium forks and my SRAM confusion, I'd discounted it, probably on the grounds of can't compute!

In my mind (a crowded and sometimes noisy place) I'd been having a bit of an internal conversation where I'd decided that Sora/Tiagra benefit was a bit of a sojourn. In other words, at my current ability level, I'd probably not notice the difference, whilst the foundation of a good frame/forks and whatever sported the best wheels, would probably serve me better in the long run, group set components apparently being throw-away cheap these days. Thus, I'd decided that as a bit of a stomach breather, I'd probably suit a more upright enduro, rather than race geometry - Bear in mind that both would be less upright than what I'm currently riding - so either will be a benefit in Fen head-winds - especially until I tame the belly.

Stop me if I'm getting it all wrong, okay?

Another thing I'd considered is that whilst 20 spoke wheels look cool, I have about 500m of asphalt planings (cinder in colonial) track to do, before I get to the billiard smooth miles of the MGB. I suspect that a pinged spoke on a 32 spoke wheel is annoying, but on a 20 spoke, it's game over and a walk home?

Further confusion is visited upon my ever decreasing cranial capacity by the surfeit of last years £7-800 bikes being discounted to £500, thus queering the already crowded key market price point of £500. I'm beginning to think that almost any other budget would have resulted in a smaller pool of suggestions to cull a result from! Hey ho.

Well, if we ignore that Planet X have clearly taken the photos to minimize the visual impact of the bird shoot welds, then the geometry (enduro), 54cm frame (suits 5' 10", 32" inside leg) and decent wheels, seems to put it immediately into the short list. That at least one person is dribbling about the Rival 22 group set, piques my interest. What/were does the Rival 22 GS sit in the scheme of things and why is it worthy of dribble? For the record, my personal preferences currently are in no particular order:

Sensa Umbria Tiagra
Verenti Belief SR 2.0 Tiagra

As ever, extra guidance required and welcome.

SRAM rival is equivalent to shimano 105, but a little lighter. It's new 22 speed, vs tiagra 10 speed. Routed cables too rather than the washing lines coming out of the shifters with tiagra.

Personally SRAM works better for me on several levels. What's your issue with it?

The Planet X normally retails for around £700. I'm a similar height to you, slightly longer legs, I've ordered the 54cm after carefully comparing the geometry to my 54cm genesis

Exactly zero, beyond knowing little about SRAM.

Come to think of it, my old Kona Blast had an SRAM group set (I stand to be corrected) and I don't recall any issues. I don't recall loving it either, but that was 1999 and the accessible knowledge base of the interweb was thinner on the ground. I knew no better, or worse.

I'm not one of those who's fussed about the de riguer labels, but now we are were we are, I'd prefer to be better informed. If SRAM Rival 22 is 105 equivalent on a triple butted alu frame (not worried about alu v carbon forks) in a more enduro geometry, then I'm very, very interested. Most bikes sporting that level of equipment are either £300 more, or last years model discounted.

I'd rather end up with the best fit for my purposes and I'm not bothered by a nominally more expensive last-year bike discounted, if all that achieves is the same result. Like I say; complete n00b willing to be guided and you're helping no end. Thanks for that.

Here's a review of the rival 22 set

http://www.feedthehabit.com/road-biking/sram-rival-22-review/

At that price, you have until the end of tomorrow to make a decision, assuming your size/preferred colour doesn't sell out in the meantime  so it's up to you, your cash

I jumped on it as a potential donor bike. I was considering a rival 22 groupset for another bike and the cheapest you can buy it is around £330. The wheels with tyres and tubes would be £150, new bars, stem, seat post, saddle £75

I rather like the styling, if it's a nice bike to ride, I might just keep it whole

The Planet X certainly looks like a killer deal. Like Cyberknight, I'd be seriously considering it if I could be sure my legs would still be attached to my body by the time it arrived!!

I don't need another bike, but sometimes a deal comes along that it would be almost criminal to let go, and I reckon the Planet X is one of them.
