parva is a solid bike for general use, short trips, paths/lanes etc, seems ideal for your use and budget

why is everyone recommending road bikes when you mention cycle pahs etc?

Most of my routes are on roads and cycle paths, with very very short woods where the trail is a smooth dirt path, minimal bumps! I'm not sure what the ideal bike would be lol just want something lighter and bigger that wont be so hard to lug around so will happily take any suggestions!

Maybe a cx or hybrid bike would be best but getting one for that money may be difficult.

You could use a roadbike but you'll likely damage the wheels taking it off road.

A mountain bike or urban bike such as the Parva or subway would be good but heavier than a cx or hybrid.

The problem is you want a good lightweight bike on the cheap not an easy feat.

I would go with the Parva or subway and not worry about weight or been the fastest
There strong and comfy and will do the job

I don't even know what's different about road bikes compared to other bikes lol that's why I came here. Needing some expert advice!

Road bikes, usually drop handle bars, high gears and thin tyres, built for road use specifically, faster than a hybrid or MTB.
CX bikes, looks like a road bike with drop handle bars, has disc brakes, fatter tyres , can go on or off road.
Hybrid, flat handlebars, lower gears for on / off road use, fatter tyres, can fit road or off road tyres.
Mountain bike, usually part or full suspension, multiple low gearing, fat knobbly tyres designed for hill climbing off road use but can be ridden on roads..

It's a mountain bike I have at the moment. It's way too small lol. I'm torn now, would I be better getting a hybrid or a road bike? Thank you for the help so far!

Go try some out. Do you have a decathlon near? Where are you?
What are your aims going forwards? just to commute at a leisurely pace I paths etcor longer rides on roads?

Also where will you be keeping the bike during the day and night? You may need to budget for decent locks and insurance which will cost you £50 or more

I live near Darlington in county Durham. My aims are to lose weight, get fit, enjoy cycling. I'd like to be able to go out for a full day on the bike, stopping for lunch and coffee. I'm not bothered about going fast or racing, I just want to enjoy cycling some decent distances on a bike that fits lol. The bike will be in the house overnight, but I do need a decent lock for it. I'll be cycling to the gym most mornings so will need it to be secure.

You might be better getting a hybrid then you have the choice of road or track, the carrera parva you linked to looks to be a good bike at the right price, a good D-lock will see your bike secure.

Thank you. I'm going to halfords in an hour to see if they have one in store. If not I'll order online when my student finance comes through. Very exciting! What kind of differences will I notice switching from mountain to hybrid? I'm assuming lack of suspension will make it bumpier lol

The hybrid is a cross between a road and mountain bike offering stiffer ride on the road due to no suspension and slightly better gearing than your current mtb, possibly bigger wheels with slightly narrower tyres, this will explain it better than I can, http://www.duvine.com/duvine_faqs/road-hybrid-or-mountain-which-bicycle-style-is-right-for-me/

That's a good hour in the car lol. I think I'm going for the carrera parva. It's in my budget and twenty quid cheaper if I order online lol. Had a sit on it, lifted it - it's very light compared to my current bike! Bit worried about the assembly required. I'll likely be back here for advice lol
