New road bike, advice please with options

Hello everyone

I have been cycling on a horrible heavy halfords mountain bike for a while now. It's too small, too heavy and too unreliable to continue, so I'm gonna buy a new road bike. I won't be going far, max probably twenty miles a time, usually on roads\cycle paths, so I assume road bikes are the best way to go? Thing is I'm a student so I don't have much money at my disposal. At a push I have £200, maybe £250. I looked in local bike shops but they're all out of my budget. I found a few from an online bike retailer, thought I'd ask for some advice about the ones I saw. Apologies if I don't link them right, or if I've made a mistake buying from here. Never bought a bike before! I'm 6foot and a heavy bloke (hopefully lighter soon) and don't need something fancy, just something reliable

Unfortunately those three are bikes of very poor quality that superficially look OK. I would avoid like the plague. For short rides have a look at the all rounder Carerra Subway 1 http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bik...F5e_O7-fwqcXHrWchb_i3vclpZlizyM1_QhoCPtvw_wcB not a road bike, but being non suspension is a good all rounder

Yes, avoid them bikes mate, they are no good.

I started out on a second hand bike similar to this:

I'm 6 foot and a big lad, the bike held up great. You should find them on eBay cheap as chips and within your budget.

You might find a bargain or two on eBay if you look for Specialized Allez, seen a few of them kicking around at £200 ish.

If you are on a limited budget why don't you look at the 2nd hand market. For £200-250 you could pick up a very nice used road bike.

Thats in southport with free delivery thrown in you can't go wrong. the same guy sells a lot of bikes on ebay and has a good feedback / reputation.

I think I'm a bit tall for it? Should I be looking for 59cm at 6foot? Thanks for posting the links. It's great because I'm not sure what is good and what is rubbish so it's really helpful!

A 56cm will fit you if you adjust the saddle height to suit you.
