iv got a cheap(ish )entry level road bike (with drops obv ),,,the gear selectors are on the flats of the bars close to the stem ,,now as iv just got this bike i ride mostly on the hoods and cover the brakes ,,it means when i wana change gear (which is quite a lot as my commute is very mixed and can range from very slow ,,uphill and coming to a stop at lights so obv u want a kinda easy gear for getting going again -and downhill bits where i can get into top and go for it )i have to move my hand from the hoods change gear and back again ,,not a huge issue but i just dont feel right riding with one hand and only one brake being covered ,,if its possible id like to fit levers with the gear selector mech built in,,this kinda thing

is it possible if i fit longer cables ,,apart from that im getting there

It is possible, and quite easy, to change to integrated brake/gear shifters. What speed cassette is it?

Hiya Jim55 :hello:

7 speed Dual Levers aren't made anymore, you could either get 8 speed Dual Levers and just use 7 of them or try and find some "New Old Stock" 7 speed levers or secondhand. 7 speed HG is near as dammit to 8 speed. 7 speed IG has thicker sprockets but thinner spacers giving the same distance between sprockets on both HG and IG, but 0.2mm less than 8 speed, might just get away with it

Confused , it does get a bit like that sometimes

Someone else will hopefully be along soon with a more extensive solution, meanwhile check out Sheldon Brown's site for the history/details of Shimano's drivetrains.

8 speed set and just use 7 of them

so they dont have to be the number of cog specific ?are most levers compatible ,,theyrs a campag set that looks like the ones i want ,,is it shimano only

the front mech and the rear set up is all shimano ,,but as long as the cables are changed id imagine the levers would b interchangable or am i missing something

Normally they do, but 7 speed and 8 speed have the same spacing between each cog. That's the only one, though!!

Shimano only, yes. Campag have different spacing.

Google 'Shimergo' for an article by Chris Juden from the CTC that goes into mind-numbing detail about what will and won't work.
Anything that shifts 8 speed Shimano *ought* to do 7 speed too.

thanks guys

double version  ,,whats that

Double means two chainrings at the front. As opposed to triple, which refers to three chainrings at the front.
