I bought my first road bike, a brand spanking new viking sprint, 6 months ago. Its an absolute cheap as chips poor quality and heavier that a car road bike but I loved it for a few months. Thats until I bought myself a Triathlon set-up cannondale CAAD R3000 with dura ace groupset fitted (also dripping with carbon fibre and other tasty goodies ;) ). Thats when I noticed the difference between the quality of Dura ace and shimano SIS shifters. I got back on my normal road bike yesterday after 2 months of solid riding on the cannondale and hated it, the gears constantly slip, even when ive set them up properly but I need the standard road setup if im going to consider racing. I figured the first thing I should change should be the groupset and the wheels as I cant afford a full setup. I obviously cant afford another set of dura-ace and the set I do have is for Time trial as the crankset sprockets are huge so swapping is out of the question. What would experienced cyclists recommend for someone who is taking the step up from noob to serious cyclist? Thanks all ;)

first of all :welcome: to c/c and regarding your question , the best thing you can do is buy the best bits for your bike you can afford , you can't do no better than that

IME the cost of a fully equipped bike, whether new or secondhand, is often little different if not lower than the cost of a groupset plus the wheels.

Your question with a target budget in the Bikes, Accessories etc. section may give you some good inputs.

+1. Upgrades are ridiculously expensive. You'll get best value for money from a second hand bike bought by somebody who wanted to try riding, bought a fast road bike and hated it.

Though there's always the option of getting the discards off somebody else with upgrade fever and is eg going from ultegra to dura-ace :-)
