new front derailleur

took my mtb back to Halfords where I bought it from ive had it for 3 years a voodoo hoodoo, its a good bike and been regularly services my front derailleur seized up so I took it in to be replaced only to be told I need my whole chainset replaced costing £165 ( is this normal practice)? when not even 8 months ago I had a new rear 9 speed cog and chain put on?

If it is just your front derailleur it may just be the cable needing to be replaced. Do you have any cycling buddies who are maintenance savvy? Or try your LBS for a second opinion. Very rare to need a replacement front chainset.

At worst you may need to replace a chainring or two.
