I replaced the chain on my Canondale 'Beast of the East' and of course, the middle cog of the front set is very worn (I have had the same chainset since 1998!) and the chain slips round. It happens on the outer cog too, but not as badly.

I guess I need to replace the chainset - what are my options and is it easy to do?

I am considering buying something like this: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-deore-fc-m590-9-speed-chainset/

What tools do I need?

Thanks for any information.

You need a girt big allen key for the crank bolts, a tool called a crank puller, possibly a bottom bracket removal tool as well as if you have never had the cranks off the BB will likely be fooked after this amount of time.

I would buy the chainset and just get your LBS to fit it, unless you realy want to start fettling a lot of bikes it will be much cheaper for you, also be aware that the chainset you linked to uses the new splined hollowtech system which is different to square taper so you would most definatley need a new BB.

You can of course still get square taper chainsets if you shop around.

Someone will be along shortly to give you a vastly over complicated version of what I just explained to you.

You could do, though the simpler and cheaper option would be to just replace the worn rings. That's assuming they are removable which is usually, though not always, the case. You need to know the BCD size of your chainset and an allen key, possibly something thin bladed to hold the slotted nuts. Spa cycles are a good source for chainrings;

Which would NEED* a shop to prepare your frame before fitting and therefore cost extra.

Cheaper option is to stick to a square taper\Octalink\Powerspline type chainset and get the matching bottom bracket to go with it - no extra frame prep required.

*Unless you have the tools & know how to squarely face your bb shell of course.

Thanks for your replies. I got the local bike shop to do it in the end, it seemed to be the cheaper and easier option.
