Shopping around for forks and headset for the old Dawes frame I got, so the tube is 1inch diameter. Should I:-

1. get 1 inch threaded headset, forks to match and quill stem

2. as per 1 but use a quill to ahead converter

3. get 1 inch threadless headest(can find them no problem) get 1 inch threadless forks - can only seem to find them in carbon, seem to find the other bits, spacers and the like no problem.

I know I want forks that will take a 700c wheel but are there any other dimensions I need to look at when ordering?

If you are going for threaded forks then get a quill stem. I used one of those quill-to-ahead converters once and it just looked wrong - really ugly. Mind you, I reckon I prefer option 3 - more stuff to choose from. I think Campag still make a nice Chorus 1" threadless headset by the way.

if option 3, you'd probably need a shim for 1 1/8 inch stems

not saying that you can't buy 1" stems just that there are loads more available at 1 1/8 inch

I think nearly every stem I've ever bought came with a 1" shim. Consequently I have a few kicking about if you want one. Haven't bought a stem for a few years now but I doubt they bother including them now.

cheers guys, well how dumb am I? I have a Surly Crosscheck frame on order and just found out that Surly do a lot of their forks in a 1" threadless option as well. Think it could be Surly, the black forks should clash nicely with the blue frame:biggrin:
