Hi Guys

Just wanted a bit of advice from all you lovely people out there, i am going to put a new chain on my specialized crosstrail comp bike after a 1000 miles of riding.

Now i have a KMC X9.73 9-speed Chain, which means nothing to me, so i was wondering if i can pick your brains and you guys tell me which is the best chain to replace as i do around 50 to 75 miles per week.

Thanks in advance for all your input

Never had a problem with SRAM PC991 chains.

If your chain is shot then I'd expect to have to change the rings and cassette as well.

My chain has just worn or streched and checked with chain tool and the 1.0 side is going through links so time to get new one

If the 1.0 mark is easy to pass through, then have a good look at the cassette as well as Spence suggests- it's likely to be worn.

Thanks Cubist,

How do i check that the cassette is worn, i know how the chain is worn with the chain tool but knowing how the cassette is worn is new to me

Doubt it'll have worn your cassette out. Changing a chain every -6000km should keep your cassette in order

I wouldnt worry about it and keep the chain you have for another 2000-3000 miles

Why are you changing your chain after only 1000 mile anyway ?

Edit : Oh its worn. Have you been using a new chain on a old casssette , odd its worn after 1000 miles ?

Have a look at the teeth on the cassette. if they look like sharks fins, ie, rounded on the leading edge instead of squarish, then maybe it might need changing. Was your chain slipping on the cassette at all? If not I would suggest a good clean and lube, 1000 miles is not that far for a chain.

MTB s can gobble up chains depending on the conditions.

Ive worn them out in 500 before now.

How can a MTB / Road mechs wear out at different ratios ? You can use MTB components on Road bikes and Road components on MTB

The only way your wearing out components at a rate of 500 miles in my opinion is poor quality components or running new mechanicals with old mechanicals. example being a new chain on a worn chain ring

Forgive the dumb question but what is the down side of using a worn chain.

Nothing really, as long as the worn chain is running with the worn cassette and chaingings. Once it gets to the point that the chain starts to slip on the cassette or chainrings or starts to randomly shift gears over bumps or under load, them it is time to change.

It has nothing to do with components. Try riding on sand in the wet. You ll get the idea.

This might explain that.

If you use a worn chain it can slip off the rear cogs just when you don't want it too ie. putting in that extra push up hill, pulling away from lights etc. It will also cause your cassette to wear before it should. Change chain now. If the cassette does look worn change that at the same time or you will have to change them both soon anyway.

I find I go through 3 chains to 1 rear sprocket set. If it is at 1% then it does need changing.
