I brought my 1st road bike 3mths ago, have had a mtb for 2yrs had problems with chain after about 18mths(uneducated bout chain wear) and had get that changed and new cassette so brought a chain wear guide tool bout a week ago to keep on top of both bikes and only have change chain, only done 800 miles on road bike and the chain is at the 1% already, so looks like new chain and mayb new cassette lbs goin check it when they change the chain. is this right that a chain can wear in only 800miles?or could it b a cheap chain on bike(carrerra tdf) so paying for a new better chain will last longer? thanks

800 miles for an uncared for (no offence intended) chain seems quite likely.
I guess the TDF is an 8 speed. I found 8 speed chains last longer than 9 or 10 speeds, just heavier duty i think. I had 3000 plus miles out of a shimano 8 speed chain on an older bike, so regular cleaning and lubing is the way to go....
The chainwear indicators...some consider them unhelpful, they dont give a true reading. I couldnt understand this at first, but they dont measure pin to pin, rather roller to roller, which is distorted by wear on the inside of the roller. I binned mine and just use a ruler.
The only consolation is that a wear indicator (for the above reasons) gives an exaggerated measurement of wear, so it may not be as bad as you think...but i suspect a LBS will just recommend you replace chain and cassette anyway.
Certainly at 10 speed, i find chains much of a muchness, shimano, campag, sram..they all wear at about the same rate.

I would have expected twice that okeydokey, but if the chain hasn't been cleaned/lubed regularly, its perfectly feasible. I doubt there's much difference in chains however (SRAM,KMC,Shimano chains all seem to wear at the same rate); I just like SRAM 8sp because of the quicklink which makes it easier for fitting/ removal my current 8sp town bike has a wipperman chain because it was cheapest when I was looking. Chain measurers are a bit overcautious IMO and if your chain is already at 1% I'd just leave it for a bit longer and carry a quicklink to fix it in the event of failure and order a new chain/ cassette at a later date.

Me too. My 11 spd Chorus chain covered 3.2k last year before I changed it and it could still have covered a few more before it had to.

There really is no rule of thumb when it comes to chain life, it's all down to how hard you ride, correct indexing & the all important factors, keeping your chain grit free & clean with regular lubrication. It always pays to buy a good quality chain, in my book KMC is a safe bet make.
