Just taken delivery of a set of 105 brakes, upgrading from the bog standard ones on my Secteur.
Do I use the cables that are already on or would it be best to fit new ones?
P.S. have never changed cables before so might be back asking advice if I need to

Cheers.

I would. They cost very little and you have to remove them anyway, so unless you know they are virtually new you may as well. If your outers are good and you keep them well lubed you could leave the outers in place and just renew the inners. None of this is obligatory if they are all in good order though.

If you happen to just replace the inners, and buy some double ended ones, flat bar nipple one end and road lever the other. Try to remember to snip off the correct end before threading through. A return to your LBS, with an admission of what you've done, will provoke much hilarity and keep them chuckling over several more visits.

I've heard of this happening to someone

I'll go and get some new cables in the morning, and set aside the rest of the day to fit them.
Better put the spare bike on standby just in case.

Use the old cable as a guide to length and also get a good pair of cycling cable cutters - they have two cutting edges for the inner and outer cable.

If you cut new outers, it helps to grind the ends flat before fitting them. A grinding wheel or angle grinder makes a good job of this.

Most new inner cables have a sealed end to thread through easier. So thread through the outers before cutting to length. Also give the cables a little lube before fitting.

Agreed. If you've already cut them though you can insert them gently into the outer with a clockwise twist to prevent them from splaying. Same when they emerge at the other end.

A lot of familiarity here with 'inserting' and 'lubing'

Having assessed the amount of work involved I have made an executive decision to use the existing cables and see how it goes. They are less than 12 months old so am hoping they'll be fine for now.
Nobody has mentioned the need to remove and replace the bar tape, which is what has made my mind up,unless I'm being dim as usual.

if you are using the original outer cables then you should be able to (carefully) thread through the inner without taking off the bar tape.

Oh good,that'll be plan B then,cheers Ian.

Plan C is to let my lbs do it,but there is a 2 week waiting list for work there

Pot's, Bar tape removal and replace is easier then it looks. You just have to take your time. Check out the video on Bike Tutor. That's how I learnt.

Right, have fitted them with the existing cables and they seem fine.Look good and just need a test ride now to make sure all is well for Mondays commute.
As mentioned on the Crud MK2 thread, they definately give a little more clearance than the stock ones so will be able to put the Cruds back on properly now, don't want my nice shiny silver brakes getting dirty do we?

Also bought 1 pair of the Koolstop Salmon pads to try on the front in the winter, will report back on their progress.
