Hi all,

So I have finally ordered my first road bike - Boardman Road Sport 2014 and am picking her up at the weekend. My plan is to put some decent rubber on her straight away and wanted some recomendations bearing in mind winter is with us now.

I have heard Gatorskins mentioned a lot, are these suitable? Are they good for this time of year?

Also, in the coming weeks I will be changing the pedals from the cage type they are stocked with to some clip ons. Having never had clip ons before can anyone recommend any? I have no clue about them whatsoever and would rather ask you knowledgable folk than the people at Halfords.. lol

Thanks in advance.

Shimano M520 SPD pedals. Double sided so easy to clip in and out of, cost around £15 with the cleats...and you can walk in SPD shoes

Ones that are comfortable for you, they do come up in different widths etc  Depends on your budget really, but I'd avoid anything really cheap, as you want a stiff sole for comfort and pedalling efficiency. Shimano and Specialized are a good place to start

I'd go to a decent sized bike shop like Evans and try on some options, buying the ones that fit best. The more MTB style ones have recessed cleats for walking

Save your money with the tyres. Ride with what was supplied. If you start having problems, then splash the cash.
And asking which tyre is up there alongside helmet debates, Shimano or Comag, wave or not wave etc
Everyone has different opinions.

True, but it would be naive of me not to ask the question. My main aim is to avoid punctures and stay safe on the roads. Tyres are the most important thing keeping me on the road so I want to make sure I understand what is good and what is not. I suspect the factory supplied rubber may not necessarily be geared up for winter.

Look after your tyres and they will look after you.
Make a point of checking them after every ride to dig out anything that's sticking to the rubber, get into the habit. Just takes a minute. If you don't then what ever is sticking to the tyre can work in and cause a puncture. It's a pain in the arse but less of a pain in the arse then a puncture.

From the Halfords site:

  • Vittoria Zaffiro - 700c x 25c tyres, perfect for both general and performance road riding

The tyres you have will probably be better then the Zaffiro's. They are lethal in the wet. If you are looking at Vittoria's then upgrade to the Rubino's. They are my tyre's of choice and I do many thousands of miles on them with very few punctures. (but see my post above)
