Suspension forks have their place if you are doing a lot of rough off-road stuff, but you'd be amazed what terrain you can cover on a rigid fork provided you have the right tyres.
My partner & did a weekend around the new forest a couple of years back, barely touching tarmac, on cyclocross/ gravel bikes - drop bars and rigid forks. Great fun and literally whizzing past people on heavy cheap sus fork mountain bikes on any inclines due to their bikes being 50% heavier.
any cheap rear suspension unit should be avoided at all costs (or attached to a boat and used as an anchor)
