New Bike = New Pedals

Hi All,

More advice needed please.

I've used Shimano Clipless Spd-SL 6700 Ultegra Silver Pedals for the last 18 months with no problems at all. Reasonable weight, good power transfer, nice and solid.

I've just got a new road bike and I am considering whether to try something a little different on the pedals, perhaps Speedplay.

I'm just wondering will I really notice any significant difference good or bad?

What do you think?

If it aint broke, dont fix it

The significant difference is that the Speedplays give a lot of very free float. Some people don't like the sensation of their foot twisting to and fro, others either naturally hold their foot still, or just don't notice.
If you've more than 1 pair of shoes, you could end up quite a bit in spare cleats.

Speedplay pedals are really good IMO, and the float is very adjustable and can be dialled out out completely if you prefer.

Only downsides are their cost, walking is far worse than SPD-SL's and the cost of replacement cleats.

I only changed mine as I couldn't afford to have them on all my bikes and I wanted one system to allow me to wear whatever shoes/boots I wanted to on any bike.

Just to throw something different into the mix, my good bike came with Look Keo Max 2 Carbon pedals.

I came from Shimano 105 pedals and really rated the Look as a marked improvement. The Keo Max 2 Carbon went on the previous bike to replace the shimano's and I bought some Ti carbon blades for the good bike. I needed the same pedal system on both bikes to allow the use of only one pair of shoes.

I believe that the Look Keo Max 2 Carbons can be had cheaper online - £80 on Pro Bike Kit or Ribble or Merlin

Speedplay have no platform as such and rely on the stiffness of the sole of the shoe, if you have the appropriate shoe then they are the bees. If you like the cleats you have but want to spend money then go for the Look as they look (geddit?) the same.
