Hi guys quick question regarding my front derailleur on my new Shimano 105 11 speed bike

I've had the bike about four weeks now and have clocked up about 400 miles, on today's ride I realised that I couldn't shift to the big writing on the front derailleur. I haven't had a proper look at it yet as I'll be popping in for a service next weekend. I did notice however that the cable seemed to be very Slack when the shifter is in the position for the smaller ring. I was wondering if this might just a bedding in issue as it's a new bike and that the cables are just given a bit (most likely to be fixed in a service)

Never had a new new bike before so not sure if it's a standard issue

Sounds like the cable clamp has loosened/was loose and the cable has slipped through.

In the small ring, the FD(front dérailleur) is under no cable tension, therefore the cable will be 'slack' in the sense that it isn't loaded. But not excessively. I'd undo the clamp, pull cable taught and then tighten the clamp to see where you are. If it's still not working, there's a setup issue which I'm sure you would have noticed earlier than today.

Good luck.

+1 but make sure the shifter is in the small ring position before you tighten the cable clamp though.

The only other time besides cable stretch and cable loosening in the clamp that I saw a true problem with this, was on a used and well beaten bike. No matter how I tried to shift from the small ring, it wouldn't budge. So I checked for tension three times before I opened the SRAM X3 shifter and found the plastic part that holds the shifter cable had broken.

As mentioned above, it's most likely that the cable has slipped from the anchor bolt a little. If you look really closely, you may see a flattened section of cable, that's where it was attached to the anchor bolt. I'm saying this as it may be easier for you to do it this way than to set up your FD from scratch, unless you know how to do it. FD set up is the trickiest part of bike maintenance that I've found. I think I have it sussed though, after all these years

With the bike being new I'd say the cable has stretched. There usually is a barrel adjuster (or the like) on the bike (look on the downtube), a few turns anti clockwise should take the slack away.

Did as advised (pulled the cable taught) but there still doesn't seem to be quite enough tension to pull the derailleur up far enough.

I was doing it by hand - be ok to use a pliers to pull and get that extra bit of tension?
