New bike brakes making a noise

As title the brakes on my new bike are making a sort of scoring noise. Popped back into Evans with it and one of the staff had a fiddle with front brake and rode it round carpark and it seemed ok. Soon as I rode it again noise is back. My hubby took off the front brake blocks and there were tiny bits of metal stuck in it, off the rims I suppose. Going to go back with it again but appreciate opinions as to whether this is normal and likely to settle down or if it is going to do permanent damage to rims and what I should expect Evans to do about it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise:smile:

Make sure you haven't got the wrong compound brake blocks in the callipers. It has been known for ceramic blocks to find their way into the callipers for alloy rims.

They are not metallic particles, they are bits of grit that have been polished by the alloy rims, which will wear out very fast indeed if you leave the grit stuck in the blocks, especially in wet weather. Slip the brake blocks out and pick out the bits of grit then clean off the shine by rubbing the blocks on wet & dry paper on a flat surface. Clean the black stuff out of the clearance slots as well and give the braking surfaces on the rims a good clean.

This is a routine little service that you need to do from time to time especially if you ride in wet and muddy conditions. It is not the responsibility of the shop. The shop people should know this and should have pointed it out to you. If you think this little occasional task is too onerous, wait until disc brakes make it into the mainstream as they are low maintenance.

Thanks for replies. Evans pretty much said the same thing @Globalti . They inspected the blocks and promised me that that was all the problem was. I didn't think they would have needed attention so soon, I have only had the bike a week and done around 60 miles. The problem began almost straight away. Anyhow Evans are now aware so if anything else develops despite keeping them cleaned I will be back.
