OK, having had several threads about the Ridgeback replacement due to a cracked frame ( http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/help-cracked-frame-on-bike-1-year-old.93449/ ) with suggestions gratefully received ( http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/£1000-option-at-evans-suggestions-please.94452/ ) Evans Leeds got me 2 bikes to test:
A Ghost Race 5000 - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/ghost/race-5000-2012-road-bike-ec032425
plus a Spesh Secteur Comp - http://www.evanscycles.com/products...omp-2012-road-bike-ec030740?query=specialized
I'm not 'brand-friendly', teaching marketing so would have initially preferred the Ghost. The budget couldn't stretch to the Lapierre Audacio 500 I had as a 3rd choice ( http://www.evanscycles.com/products/lapierre/audacio-500-compact-2012-road-bike-ec031562 ).
Firstly I tried the Ghost. This is definately a old-school frame structure and whilst it looked good in the photos and on paper I wasn't that impressed with it overall.
The Spesh surprised me - that looked better than in the photo. It also fitted better and rode much better. So ... I've paid the extra £200 to have it as a replacement. Thanks to Paul Secteur for suggesting it.
A bonus was the voucher code they've got on their site: http://www.evanscycles.com/pages/free-accessories - Alexvs I owe you thanks there.
We tried it - neither the shop nor me was sure it would work. A phone call later and £150 to spend was mine. I'd bought some BG Comp Road shoes but they were tighter than I'd hoped in size 43 - so will go on sale here shortly, having only been used twice. The voucher bought me a pair of BG Expert Road shoes in size 44: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/bg-expert-road-shoe-ec025551 There's no way I'd have paid £150 for them so I'm grateful.
