The hat on the table goes back to when you'd have your hat brought to you, prior to leaving.

It does irritate me seeing 'young folk' habitually wearing hats inside as if said hat; usually a baseball cap, is glued onto their heads.

tho a generally respectful sort I was once ticked off by an italian bloke who could be somewhat prissy for, forgetfully, leaving my hat on, when wandering round an italian church.
which on reflection made me more likely to do it in future.
Particularly as I know his own faith went south when as a youngster a priest tried to feel him up.
Best keep the cycling helmet on for safety in future I guess.
