I couldn't cycle Up to the point I collected my first bike from the shop. By the time I got home about two miles away I could ride. Remember you need to pick up a bit of speed before you will be able to balance, too slow and you'll wobble all over the place. Good luck.

Interesting thread and relevant to me as I'm a 30 year old bloke who never rode a bike as a kid. My fiancee has always been into cycling, so last month I found the council scheme and had a free adult cycling lesson. Maybe I was just lucky, but in the space of 2 hours I was riding along merrily. So I thought "sod it, I just need to get out there" and went and bought myself a brand new CX bike. Been on it 6 times in the last two weeks. The only awkward bit is transporting it away from roads as we are in a traffic-heavy area and I don't want to cause a mass pile-up just yet.

So, the morale of the story OP, is well done for asking and finding out, now just give it a go. I struggled with the idea of not being able to do something that nearly everyone else could, but if you don't try you'll never find out.

I'd be keen to hear how you get on and I am only based in Leeds, so drop me a PM if you fancy a ride out and falling off together at some stage

Our nephew who is 9 couldn't ride a bike his mum claimed it was because he didn't have a dad around to teach him which is a load of bullocks it was laziness on her part.A couple of us had tried to teach him from time to time but I think fear was the main aspect. He was round at our house the other day and my kids had their bikes on the front and my youngest son decided he would teach him ....It took him no more than 10 min and his cousin was riding on his own which made me proud of both of them

I have taught a good number of adults to ride here in Cambridgeshire.... usually they are on their own in an hour and a half.....last one was a lady in her 50's who fell off a bike as a child and never been near once since...the next one is a spanish lady who works in the NHS who has never ridden......

Yes, as said put seat down so that it becomes a Balance bike.

When learning make sure ground is flat as this allows a good distance to be covered whilst feet are off the ground.
Once mastered cycling becomes easy because balancing at low speed is a bit harder in itself.

Now practice your braking to learn 'bike control'. I have seen over confident kids forget about this aspect, panic and then run into a wall.

It looks like Kevin hasn't been back since his original posts. Hopefully he learned how to ride and has got himself a bike.
