Yes I was also thinking of retaping the bars, think this will definitely improve it from a buyer's point of view.

Then the buyer can rotate them back if that's their choice, but the fact remains it will look a lot more photogenic with them level, and the OP is after top dollar after all

Shame you've not still got the San Marco Rolls, that would have been perfect for it ^_^
Good thinking but if I'd bought it I would end up putting them back the way they are.
That Rolls probably did more miles in the post than I ever was going to do on it...

i would also think early mid 70's Carlton . Any sign of a frame number anywhere or on the stearer section of fork might help id it .

as for value with no id around the £125 area at max on a good day i would say

Thanks for the info everyone.

Think I may sell after retaping the bars etc on that popular auction site. We'll see, I'll let you know!

In the meantime any more info is gratefully received!

Plan : Hopefully going to pick up some bar tape and re do the bars today. Then will get the Brooks off and put an old pretty standard saddle on it. Will then either keep the Brooks or sell it separately, and will then sell the bike!

If the Brooks isn't in someone else's "shape" already, I'd be tempted to keep it and give it a try. Not everyone gets on with them but lots of people do.

Can't help with an ID or evaluation but I agree that it is a nice looking frame. Pity its too small for you.

Its not immeditely saying carlton to me. Certainly not a mid 70s Cobra. The rear stays top treament looks different. Possibly Sun.... Any joy on the frame number?

It looks a little later than 70's to me. I'd have guessed early 80's having bought a similarly equipped bike in 1985.

Looks like a build up of bits, not a factory build.

A lot bikes in the mid 80s were built up ad hoc. I turned up at the shop in The Strand and they quite literally put it together as I waited! Surprisingly I was able to ride it to Chelmsford with any mechanicals although the tyres were shockingly bad.

I still have the brochure and the frames look very similar in style to the OPs although not the same make. You almost certainly didn't get a bike matching the brochure spec, you got what bits they had at the time.

I'd be interested to know what features it has that date it earlier than the 80's.

I think you will find that this was a mass produced bike, almost all chromed frames were, sold as a complete bike.Somebody has robbed it of parts,& it has been built up again. It is often the cheapest & easiest method of finding the parts for an old frame,I have a few like that on the go at the moment.

That is rather lovely, with bags of potential. Regarding the Suntour friction shifters on a Raleigh band, I'm currently watching these - seem perfectly OK to me, and the Suntour Powershift is a brilliant design. I currently run Powershifts on a couple of old road bikes, and have done for years, even though I have bar-end levers and STIs in the spares box! (Had a few funny moments trying to bend "normal" brake levers when I swapped over from STIs, though!)

Regarding the Suntour friction shifters I have them on my original '84 Clubman done thousands of miles and as yet still work perfectly. Would recommend the acquirement of said shifters.
