Need new brakes with long drop (57mm?) - compatability help

Hi all,

The used 105 upgrades I put onto my Giant SCR3 werent long enough for the pads to sit against the rims.

Would anyone know if the SRAM Apex are compatible - they state that they are suitable for a frame that takes 28mm tyres and another site says suitable for mudguards so, would the Apex have the same drop as a Shimano 57mm? (Limited budget here...)

Apex has a standard 49mm drop. Miche and Tektro both sell long drop calipers which can be had pretty cheaply...

Have you thought about BR-A550 (or 650 also) Shimano Callipers. Long Drop. Got these on my commuter. Very good stoppers.

Black n Yellow, I was looking at the Tektro ones - on Ribble whose prices are excellent with their online discount - here (http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Brakes-Road-Tektro-R737-AG-Brakes-57mm/TEKTBRAR270).
You reckon theyre decent stopping power?

I can't offer much of an opinion on the Tektro ones unfortunately, as i don't think I've ever used them. However, I do have a set of the Miche calipers on my winter bike and they work very well. I did change the pads though - the stock pads were pretty awful and a decent replacement set transformed the performance. Either way, I would have thought that the Tektro calipers would be just as good (pads notwithstanding)

I've got the Shimano long drops on my light tourer and they are excellent, far better, in my opinion, than Tektro.

I have Tektro R358s (I think that's the number) on my audax bike and they work fine

I don't dspute Tektros work well - I just prefer the Shimano ones

Shimano are light years ahead of Tektro IME.
Tektro pads are particularly rubbish, but I don't rate the brakes all that highly either.

I use koolstop salmons on my Shimano - works really well, a nice combo for long drop brakes.
