Need Help With front derauiller

I changed my front derauiller cable yesterday and in the process of adjusting the deraillier.I have adjusted the derailler so it sits 3mm above the large sprog and have adjusted the smallest sprog so its correct.But when i change up to the largest cog to correct that one it wont change on the changer on the bars as it is very tight it moves to the middle gear on the changer but the chain remains on the first cog any help will be much appreciated as im getting frustrated have a thread the cable wrong?? any help will be much appreciated.

I have shimano alivio looks like a early model of it tho very basic and standard.

Did you only change the cable?

If so, why do you need to adjust the derailleur?

Sounds lijke you maybe tightened cable into derailleur cable clamp with the shifter not in its lowest "setting" so you dont have enough travel on shifter to get enough cable pull to get onto large chainring.

Best thing to do is put lever in its fully in its small chain ring position with cable threaded but not clamped in derailleur, so derailleur is on smallest chainring. Adjust the L screw if required. Then tighten the cable into the cable clamp - thats your smallest sproket done. Then large chainring travel is set by the H screw.

Bish bash bosh - youre done.
