Hi, I have just started time trialling and have upgraded by standard wheels to carbon fibre deep section wheels. I have swapped rear cassette ok but have a problem when coming to fit the special brake pads they have supplied with the new wheels. On looking at my brake pad they are a sealed rubber unit and therefore I am unable to swap over just the pads. Can anyone link me to a set of break cartridges that will fit my current brake setup and accept these new pads? I currently have a specialized allez 2010 with -Front Brake:Light dual pivot brake, Teflon pivots, forged alloy, w/ standard padsRear Brake:Light dual pivot brake, Teflon pivots, forged alloy, w/ standard pads

Do I even need to change the pad's?

Many thanks

You need the carbon specific brake pads if you have wheels with a carbon braking surface - normal ones will wear through the carbon really quickly.

I would have thought that most shoe/pad combo's would fit.

Using normal pads on carbon rims isn't necessarily a case of fast rim wear. First off, you should not use the same pads on alloy and carbon rims, even if they provide equal stopping power - if you look at some blocks used on alloy rims you may find bits of metal embedded in them...if they then score the carbon rim you could weaken the structure over time. This will mean a 5 minute job swapping pads if you intend to use your standard wheels again.

What you need are brake shoes. In all likelihood you need the Shimano style ones with a little retainer screw (even though I'm a Campag man, I have swapped out all the shoes for ones with a screw). I bought mine from PBK but I can't find them on their website now. Next best solution is to buy some cheap shoe+cartridge packs like this and swap the pads. You may need to re-use any orbital washers from your existing pads.

I've never used pads which have come with carbon wheels so cannot comment on their stopping ability in various conditions. Many people swear by Swissstop Yellows so that is what I went for when I got my first carbon hoops.

If you've just started TTing, have you done all the cheaper aerodynamic improvements? Clothing, helmet, tribars, position?

go for swisstops or else the carbon pads that are stated to use with your wheels that the manufaturer quotes . i have the current problem of having o wait for carbon pads to be released from either swisstop or campagnolo as super record brake blocks have changed in design  as there is no retainer screw and uses a slot and leaf spring.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I have had Disco recommended to me. I haven't used them yet, but they appear to have a huge range of pads and shoes, for Shimano and Campag.
