I need to take off the back wheel - I'm not sure what to do about the chain?
What do I do with it while transporting?
And how best would I put it back on?

I've bought a Rockrider with quick release and front and back wheels
I wanted quick release so that I could take in my saloon car - frame in the back seat and wheels in the boot

It never dawned on me that the back wheel had the chain on!

Thanks

The rear wheel is best removed and replaced when the gearing is set to smallest front ring and smallest rear cog. It just makes it easier to wiggle it all around.

If you do this......don't fret too much about the chain while you are transporting it. Wrap a rag around if you are worried about it snagging or banging around the chainstays. Replace the wheel the same way you took it off. It's a bit of a faff.......but is the way it's done most of the time.
If you are air-shipping the bike and want to ensure everything stays put then the above is sensible advice,,,but for the back of the car you will be ok.

Just make sure everything goes back the same way it came off.

@cyberknight thanks
i assumed i could easily take off the front and back wheels, throw in the boot and go off riding
am i correct in saying that taking off the back wheel may not be a super easy 10 second job?
let me know
thanks

@Widge thanks for the reply
i've just seen a youtube video. seems straight forward

super dumb question
: how do i get into lowest gear?
the left gear 'thing' is 1, 2 and 3
the right is 1, 2... 8, 9
i put both left and right into lowest numbers?

ok... ok... so i've never had a bike with gears before. lol

thanks

Big front ring and second to smallest rear sprocket. Makes a fast removal and not too much chain sag. Having the chain on the big ring covers the teeth that can easily damage car upholstery. Oh, and put an old sheet down to protect the seats from oil.

Big front ring gives you some chain tension, second smallest sprocket gives you a little more clearance with the frame when refitting.

On removing quick release, pull mech towards the back of the bike and the wheel will drop out clearing the mech.

..a long way from somewhere called Home..
make sure you tighten the QR skewer handle properly after replacing the rear wheel

why didn't you ask the shop when you bought the bike..?
go back and get them to show you..?

PS
the left gear changer is 1-2-3 for the front chainset
small ring [low gear] - middle - large ring
the other is for the rear...yup.!
1 is the smallest cog = high gear
8 whatever is large = low gear

so select 1 and 8 to help remove the rear wheel
use latex gloves........haha

As others have said when you have your gears right the only thing you need to do to make it easier is to pull the rear meach out of the way as you lift the wheel out of the drop outs , it really is a few second job .The chain holder just keeps the chain straight if you use it although if the frame was in the car upside down i doubt you would need one as long as you have something over the seats to stop oil marks from the chain .Have you tried just taking the front wheel off and seeing if it will fit ?

Not sure which rockrider bike you have, but on mine you have to let the air out of the tyre to get the rim off, because the inflated tyre hits the brake blocks, if you have disc brakes then you don't have that problem.
