Need advice on bike computers.

I'm just after something fairly basic but with enough features to be fun. Also I'm interested in the idea of the wireless ones and would like to know peoples views on them. The cadence meters sounds interesting and I'd like to know how they work. As you can see I'm a bit of a newbie so please forgive me if I've stuck this up in the wrong place or have failed to see another thread full of advice.

Cadence basically tells you how fast you are pedalling. If going for wired, I'd just get a front fork mounted one to be as neat as possible - anything will do.

For cadence, then you really need a wireless one - but up goes the price. I have a cateye double wireless that has been through all weathers in the last two years, with nothing more than a couple of battery changes. Down side is they are about £60-£70. It's never suffered interferance either, even when there are two high powered LED lights sat either side of it.

How do cadence meters work ?

Same way as the speedometer by counting a magnet, in this case on the pedals, passing a detector but without the need to convert the raw data beyond pulses per minute.

In that case I think I'll forego cadence meters and wireless options. Budget wise I am very much around the £25-£30 max level. Basicaly it's just for a bit of fun and to add an extra dimension to bike journies. I'm not after one for any serious sporting reasons. I've looked around on the web but I think the extra advice from people who have experience of various devices is really useful, as already seems to be the case so tahnks for that.

Works fine – instructions were unintelligible (to me anyway)

I got a 6 quid one from Halfords that tells you your MPH, distance traveled, time, and some other mundane information that I don't use. It's a wired one and if you just want it for a speed readout, then it's fine.

I only wanted a MPH readout, and it does me fine. The only thing that gets on my nerves is that it measures distance in metres, not miles or kilometres.

How many wires are from the computer bracket mount down to the pedal area? one with a split in that area, or two for each sensor?

Two wires, one for each sensor. joined together for most of the run, but split near the bottom bracket.

I got a Cateye Velo 8 for just under £20 from the LBS. Only used for once journey but it does plenty for the price - i got a wired one after reading mixed reports in wireless ones, people getting interference, speed suddenly jumping up to 110 mph, etc!

I'm a big fan of the Cateye Wireless Strada. It's been bomb-proof for the last eighteen months. I bought a second one for another bike a couple of months ago. (The second bike kit is about £5 less than the whole caboodle, if you shop around). £34 all up including postage should see you sorted.

tesco do a 17 function one wireless speed but wired cadence for a tenner . its worth that for the batteries included in it. fairly easy to fit too
