Hi guys,

So I could really use some help. Over the last couple of months I have been surfing the web, talking to friends, posting on boards (this one included) and talking to people shops about which bike is the right one for me. I have narrowed the options down to 2 bikes that I feel will work for me but I am now stuck and could really use some help.

The bikes are:

- Giant Defy 2

- Trek 1.2

I could really use some advice about which of these would be best for commuting/touring/fitness, which one would be more reliable and which one would be better value for money?

Any help, thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Its horse for courses, I'd choose the Trek over the Giant for road use and vice versa for offroad.
On what surface will you be commuting?
The Trek will be faster on a tour, but maybe not carry as much as the Giant - plus the shorter chainstay on the Giant means you're heels may hit the panniers (if you choose to use them).
Multiple hand positions on the Trek, but you can add bar=ends to the Giant.
Fitness? Either of them

The Trek 1.2 comes in a few different gearing options including a Triple chain ring version...which one of them are you considering? If it is the triple then there is no contest, the Defy doesn't have that option - Compact double only.

I think the Defy is prettier...but when I got my 2010 Defy 2 I compared the 'feel' of it to the then current Trek 1.2 and the Trek just didn't feel right to me. On paper they are much the same, chainset excepted.

Try them both out, one will fit you better than the other and your mind will then be made up.

I'm also looking at a couple of bikes; and just like you, I'm as yet undecided which to chose? I like the Specialised Allez, But for a bit more money - The Focus Cayo is a tremendous looking bike and has a good spec for the money, with a full carbon frame and fork! From your choice I'd go with the Treck! I quite like the Trek 1.2 c. Selling at Evans Cycles for £850 reduced from £1049, Nice bike.

I have the defy 2 more than happy with it and would get another. Rides nice no real problems and the compact is good for hills. Can't comment on the trek as I have never tried one
