A visit to a 'tip' that recycles bikes will get the OP a replacement wheel (with an aluminium rim) rather cheaply (even if one has to buy the whole bike (12-15 pounds) strip what one wants off it and return the residue. The OP's LBS may also have a used but more modern wheel that fits, again cheap. One really wants a front wheel where operating the brakes has a decelerating effect.

Update: In the end I went for a 26"x1.95 schwalbe city jet K-Guard, which fits well.
