I was sitting at a set of traffic lights this morning waiting to turn left, a car was next to me waiting to turn right. We were both turning onto a busy road, I know the area well and know that there is a shared cyclepath that crosses the lights.
As I was waiting I saw a cyclist come along the path at a good speed up towards the lights, the path isn't straight when it hits the lights, there is a 20 feet right turn, the cyclist did not appear to look at the lights. Just as he was getting to the lights the lights changed and I started to move, after only having gone a few inches I realised the cyclist wasn't stopping and so I hammered on my brakes or I would have rid over him. The cyclist then had to hammer on his brakes because the car next to me appears not to have seen him at all and had just pulled away, if the cyclist hadn't stopped at the last second he would have been under the other car drivers wheels.
I got a sheepish look off the cyclist and a hand waved apology to which he got a "no problem" nod; he was lucky he wasn't in an ambulance, hopefully he will be more careful there tomorrow.
