I cycle for pleasure also, knowing you're able to do a certain distance means you can plan rides to more exciting places. If I didn't know I was able to do 30,40, 50 miles I wouldn't be able to do Peak District rides and that would suck a lot.

i cycle for the pleasure of it, i don't have any plans to race anyone, but if you don't push your distances you never get any better.

when i used to cycle (over ten years ago) i concentrated on 10 mile rides and 30 mile rides, for years thats all i ever did and got quite good at those distances, but going further was never in my mind at all.

now I'm back into it i don't want to level off like that again. getting regular rides over the 30mile mark is a big psychological challenge but i working up to it in steps.

this time round i want to be good, not to beat anyone else, but just because i want it

I find the pleasure is a long ride. Planning your route, working out how much food and all that stuff, but if the wind gets too strong time to bail out, so would go as fast as I can for an hour!!

You should be looking for quality mileage .. maybe plan a more rewarding circuit using google maps..

but I do have a slight issue with your thread title.. there is many on here over 50 and well over who would ride your legs off and leave you feeling you had no lower limbs .. being 50 is not an 'age'

just a minor and petty point I am making.....

This is one of the things I like about cycling as a form of exercise. If I head out on a longish loop there is usually a point when I'm feeling tired and thinking I've maybe gone a bit too far, but I've got no option but to suck it up and push on. Usually I'll get a second wind and it's not a problem, or it's just a matter of gritting teeth and putting up with it.

If I'd been trying to exercise on a stationary bike I'd have just given up and got off.

I also cycle mainly for pleasure, but I like to challenge myself too. Nothing better than combining your favourite past time with a bit of a challenge. Mine is to cycle 100 miles this year and to complete the Wild Wales Challenge without pushing my bike up any hills!

Shouldn't be too tricky - that's only 2 miles a week on average.

What?
