well i know what your getting at. last weekend i did 76 miles (not in one ride) and felt really great, one of my best weekends yet, but yesterday i did 40 miles and things didn't go so well. i don't know if i ate my snack to quick, but halfway round i had real bad stomach cramps . i made it round but it wasn't the same.

I'm hoping things go better today :becool:

also, laps are not best. it's all to easy to give up and go home. if you need help setting a ride of certain distance, i find this website to be very helpful...

You have good days and bad days. I don't normally worry about it too much as sometimes you can feel quite rough the first 20 miles before you've warmed up and then it's a breeze after that. Sometimes you feel great and then it kicks in badly at about 50miles.

I find it tends to get me in the legs first if I'm not "up for it". It got me today after about 38 miles. I don't think the temperature today helped. It's usually raining in Wales - I'm not used to the sun!.

Try planning a route on Google Maps. That's what I do, make a kind of loop of X amount of miles. Of course it then means you have to soldier on, and like today it can get really hard going but I had no choice but to go the whole distance. I treated myself to an ice cream though.

I'd look at a route that is 25 miles long. You will find the impetus to complete the final two miles far stronger when it's getting you home rather than yet again repeating a 2 mile loop. That said we all get bad days and you have to ask yourself why you are cycling. If you are training it is worth digging in, if you are just doing it for enjoyment why push yourself.

If your local train services allow bike carriage without booking, you can always ride out roughly along a rail route, and have the option of bailing out along the way out, at the furthest point, or on the way back....

I also cycle mainly for pleasure, but I like to challenge myself too. Nothing better than combining your favourite past time with a bit of a challenge. Mine is to cycle 100 miles this year and to complete the Wild Wales Challenge without pushing my bike up any hills!
