You see @mjr ? You are still merely "a driver" - if you practice longtime, and study at the feet of the masters, then ...
you too may become A Motorist, My Son.

(My own organisation - Institute of Advanced Cyclists, watch this space for subscriptions - support only using front lights on steep descents. Clearly your observation skills SHOULD deal with all other situations! )
You're a few years too late, from 2007.

What I see regularly is that indicating starts after the manoeuvre has begun. On motorways, this means an indicator coming on to show a lane change after the vehicle has already started to move across. In town, some drivers hit the indicator as they turn the steering wheel.

Yep. See trhis all the time, and it really gets my goat. Indicators are to tell people what yiou are going to do, not what you are already doing.

Yup

also - people who are in the lane outside of mine and some way behind

and I indicate to show that I intend to move right to pass a slower vehicle

and instead of staying where he (probably) is then they speed upa bit so I can;t move out and have to slow down behind the slower vehicle!!

what is that about????

I used to be a member - passed the test and all that

whenever I tried to get a discount or low rate due to membership it always still ended up more expensive than other options

never did find that it saved me any money
glad I did it - but it was never worth it for the insurance

N.B. that was many many years ago - I left when I did some sums regarding the amount it costs to run it and how much the "executives" got paid to run a charity

My father was a marketing manager at an insurance company. The bane of his life were constant calls from IAM members asking why they didn't get a discount on their motor insurance.
He'd take their policy number then explain that company statistics showed that those policy holders who had disclosed their IAM membership had significantly worse claims records than those that didn't.

This was early 80's. The 'advanced' driving test has probably changed since then.

When I was taking the test I had to go to a few local meetings
The presentations were quite interesting - especially one from the Police about roundabouts and how people use them

The other members there were in 2 very distinct groups
a) people like me who had to be there to qualify to take the test
b) older people who always went

Those in group (a) were just normal people
Group (b) gave an attitude of being superior people who knew more about cars and driving than "other people"
a few - the ones who were actively involved in training new members for the test - were OK and realistic
but the others were a right pain

So I can believe that the driving standards standards are overall actually lower - especially if you add in an attitude of "I have a certificate that says I am a better driver so anything that happens is YOUR fault"
