My father was a marketing manager at an insurance company. The bane of his life were constant calls from IAM members asking why they didn't get a discount on their motor insurance.
He'd take their policy number then explain that company statistics showed that those policy holders who had disclosed their IAM membership had significantly worse claims records than those that didn't.
This was early 80's. The 'advanced' driving test has probably changed since then.
When I was taking the test I had to go to a few local meetings
The presentations were quite interesting - especially one from the Police about roundabouts and how people use them
The other members there were in 2 very distinct groups
a) people like me who had to be there to qualify to take the test
b) older people who always went
Those in group (a) were just normal people
Group (b) gave an attitude of being superior people who knew more about cars and driving than "other people"
a few - the ones who were actively involved in training new members for the test - were OK and realistic
but the others were a right pain
So I can believe that the driving standards standards are overall actually lower - especially if you add in an attitude of "I have a certificate that says I am a better driver so anything that happens is YOUR fault"
