Take a look at www.mapyx.com. The Mapyx Quo system has taken over as my favourite. The software is a free download, then you buy the maps you need. I bought the whole of the UK 1:50000 Landranger set for £99.99 a couple of years ago. A set of paper OS maps would cost a lot more. Now I print out the sheets I need - double sided to save weight - and mark in my route. They also do maps in other scales and GPS systems.
No connection with Mapyx and of course there are other brands.

Buy a GPS then sell it off on Fleabay afterwards.

I'm staggered/impressed by all of the replies - all of which are very constructive, so thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'm happy using a map 'cos it's the most flexible and probably lowest cost.
 
I tend to navigate get there by either map/ gps/ wandering or a combination of all three. The only problem I find with a map sometimes is its size, what mitigates this for me is printing out a route on memory map which allows you to define how much mapping you need.

why dont you go halfrauds halfords and they do a £49 sat nav just find a way to mount it or do somthing and then when youve finished use it on other rides / cars
