It's not just "a private company running an 'agreed syllabus'", it is a nationally agreed programme and everyone providing training must follow the approved course. It would be very difficult for any other outfit to set up a competing course with national recognition, tho' BC is developing its own, for reasons I'm not sure of, altho' I believe that the original cost of the Bikeability course was a factor.

Well the course has ended and I am provisionally accredited. It means I am allowed to teach on a one to one basis and also groups in an off road situation. Working with another instructor I can also teach on road skills.

Looking back at the course and seeing how all the pieces fit together I would highly recommend it to anyone who leads or guides a cycle group.

I am tired, my brain hurts but I have a glow of satisfaction about me (or maybe I just need a bath ;))

I'm thinking of doing it, and your sensible comments and response to my early scepticism have really helped.
As I get older and the kids get older, would be useful to combine the sport coaching with the leisure riding on the road.

Thanks very much indeed Dave5N. Nothing you learn on the course is rocket science, some of it may be a little counter-intuitive for a while but at the end it all comes together and makes sense.

If you do get on the course I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy it.

Cheers,

I'll probably give it a go through BC when they launch. Doing my Track Coach badge soon so other priorities at the moment. But like the idea of learning more about leading road rides.

Do they tell you how to avoid getting hopelessly lost?

I haver never even been on a track, something I will have to look into in a while. All the best for that qualification.

 Well they do suggest you reconnoitre the route before you take out a client and suggest reading a map, but navigational skills are not part of the course

Is it worth someone like me who uses a bike for fitness and commuting doing a course .Not an instructors course ,just a safe cycling course?

If so can anyone provide a link to course providers.

Anyone who is National Standards Qualified is able to tutor on a one to one basis to the requited level of the client. As such I or any other Instructor could arrange a series of session with you on a schedule designed around your requirements.

I hope the above makes sense, as I am very tired at the moment.;)
