Well, it is now official. I have been booked on the National Standard Cycle Instructors Course on the 14th-15th and 21st-22nd of March. I am so pleased that my name was put forward and accepted. The future is starting to look bright. I also have a MTB Trail Leaders course booked for 6th-8th April and I get to borrow a 2009 Cube Hardtail for the 3 days :hyper::hyper:

I've done one with my county council's road safety group, so as I can teach kids what used to be "Cycling Proficiency" level 2.

I heard the National one was really expensive?

Yep sounds like the same one. The course used to be £600, it is now £200 for 4 days.

I think I'm level 1A, in fact I'm almost certain.

Hmm... not sure about what the A stands for ( starts to think of possibilities) but congrats on being able to cycle in a playground:biggrin:.

Just went and looked at the link ... didn't know they had an A and B level:blush:.

I'm hoping to do this! I've also recently done my mountain bike trail leader award. I really enjoyed it.

Emm, well scepticism is good and health sometimes, other times it prevents you from moving on in life.

The aim of the course is to create professional cycling instructors, able to deliver cycle training to different groups, age and levels, according to the Nationally defined Standards. Ie - It's a bit like becoming a driving instructor.

Horrible website. Can you tell me what a National Standard Cycle Instructor can do? I'm a bit sceptical.

With NCI qualifications you can:

1. teach children and adults how to ride a bike under control in road circumstances

2. Ride safely on the road.

3. Teach according to a nationally agreed standard devised after very extensive consultations with a wide variety of existing training providers and others

4. Turn out riders who know, not only how, but why, they should ride as they do and do it consistently and in such a way as to indicate to other road users that their riding is predictable and safe.

5. Give trainees the confidence that they know how to ride safely in traffic and thereby increase the numbers of cyclists on the road.

Not sure what your scepticism arises from - can you explain?

I have been teaching safer cycling as a member of a County Council's road safety team for quite a while now. Last month we all went on a NSCI course run by a company called Cycle Experience, and I found it superb. It was good to know that what we had been doing was very, very close to National Standards.

The course will ensure that more people ride bikes more often and more safely. It is much better than the old Cycling Proficiency course which didn't even take children onto the road.

I hope that you enjoy your course - do tell us how you get on.
