Acetone is suprising gentle on most of the painted surface I use it on, cars, bikes, household, etc.

I used to use acetone as glue for airfix kits. And disolve the plastic of airfix kits in acetone to make filler. Admittedly that's polystyrene not "all plastics" nor "all paint" after all, the stuff comes in plastic bottles (polypropylene I'd guess) but I'd still be cautious on an unkown material.

I once went into a chemist asking for some, the girl behind the counter had never heard of acetone and thought I wanted something for stomach problems, staff training these days sometimes leaves a bit to be desired.

As a younger person she pobably only knows the modern IUPAC name. If you'd asked for propanone or propan-2-one she'd have known what you were on about (grandad)

By girl I meant 35 to 40 year old. Sorry.

I was being slighlty silly as I doubt anyone really calls acetone propanone even if it is the offcial name.

Does anyone really call acetylene ethyne for instance? And even though I was taught ethene instead of ethylene, not sure it's caught on in the real world.

That said, it's 35 years since I did my a-levels and I've not done any chemistry since
