I use acetone for lots of things, in fact I buy it a gallon at a time, but I would use a polish to remove most marks on a bike.

I'd be somewhat cautious on certain plastics or many types of paint. I too keep a litre of acetone in my solvents cupboard, but would be more inclined to try meths or petrol/paraffin for cleaning stains or scuffs off a bike.

I remember trying to buy acetone at the chemists and the pharmacists pointed me to the nail varnish remover shelf. Some are however "acetone-free" and none stated the acetone percentage as they are all watered down somewhat. The guys was bemused / horrified when I proceded to open the lids and do the "sniff test" to acertain how watered down each one was. There was a bit of mischief there as well as nasal chemical analysis. Found someone on fleabay selling acetone and isopropyl alcohol by the litre subsequently - a lot easier and cheaper

I once went into a chemist asking for some, the girl behind the counter had never heard of acetone and thought I wanted something for stomach problems, staff training these days sometimes leaves a bit to be desired.

Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0! Normally used for cars.

I have a white bike and a few weeks ago was on a ride and decided to stop for a few minutes and refuel. I leaned my bike up against one of those little plastic bins that was held onto a lampost, you know the type. It's plastic, what damage can it do? I got to my end point and noticed three or four little scratches/marks on my downtube. I had been careful, the bike hadn't slid all fallen onto the metal of the lampost. I was p***ed. My mate said, 'I have something for that' and proceeded to get out a cotton cloth and some Scratch X. A few rubs and a few minutes later, all gone.

I gave my bike a really good clean and overhaul last week, getting rid of all the Winter c**p from the bike and wheels etc. Used very hot water and some Meguiar's Wash and Wax. The scratches are nowhere to be seen (I thought that washing may get rid of the magic of Scratch X).

Buy some Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0. You won't be disappointed. My bike is Aluminium, BTW. I cannot vouch for Carbon frames/finishes.

**I am not associated with Meguiar's in any way, shape or form. I'm just a regular guy who was blown away with this stuff.**
