That explains why the axle is threaded, it's so an extractor/puller can be used to remove it, mind you a big hammer does the trick too.
That makes a bit more sense. I have @Yellow Saddle to thank for the big hammer trick, and am hoping that a bit more whacking will get it all back together satisfactorily.
I've done a bit of googling on cartridge bearing hubs, and this clip seems to support the whacking method!

Don't re-install bearings with a hammer unless you can find something the same diameter as the outer race, you'll 'indent' the tracks and knacker the new ones.

A post-script to this saga : I bought 2 new cartridge bearings, but then found fitting them accurately into the hub was a surprisingly difficult task, and no amount of improvising by me would get them to go in flat. So I've been to the LBS today and let the experts do it for £8.
End of story.

To remove a bearing from a Hope hub you have to bash it out from the opposite side with a mallet, it will pop out with the axle in it just like yours then you have to pull the bearing off the axle and re-insert the axle to push the other bearing out. The bearing shields on an old Hope hub look exactly like yours too.

Old Hope hubs at least don't have anything engraved, they just have a green Hope label.

I don't think they're Hope. I've never come across a Hope hub with an inner-threaded axle.

Here's what I think the older ones looked like:

That's old? Mine are even older; the brake rotor is attached by a screw-on collar, not bolted direct to the hub. Still giving great service.

No it's not. I can't link you to a pic of my hubs right now because the work server doesn't like Photobucket but I'll try to remember at home after tonight's hooligan ride.
